おどし【脅し】

1 〔脅かし〕 ＝おどかし, いかく².

●脅しとして as [by way of] a threat

・その男は何か脅しめいたことを言いませんでしたか. Did that man say anything that sounded threatening?

●この子はもう脅しが効かない. Threats won't work with this child anymore. | You can't frighten this child into behaving any longer.

・脅しが効いて, 彼は翌日金を持ってきた. Our threats worked, and he brought the money the next day.

・あれは脅しが効く男ではない. He's not the kind of man who can be moved by threats. | Threats don't work with [have any effect on] that man.

●脅しに屈する give in [bow] to a threat; (allow oneself to) be intimidated

・脅しに弱い be easily intimidated; give in easily to threats
